Well I finally got around to pouring some plates with this flow hood, and I can report great success! Poured 25 plates both large and smaller ( silver dollar size) and only had 1 spot of contamination on 1 plate. Not too bad! So in retrospect, you can build a hood including your own laminar filter, and it works!

The resistance is what helps achieve laminar flow by creating pressure on the back side of the filter. If every inch of the back side is under pressure, the air flows smoothly out the front side.

  • My Hood cost $315 dollars, and that is me being in Canada where it is hard to find HEPA's at a decent price. I think someone located in the U.S with access to simple tools and some wood can easily build a decent flow hood for $150-200, much less then what FP wants for one of their hoods.
