Mar 23, 2017 · There are two easy ways to change the characteristics of your cam. Advancing and retarding the cam can move the power band up or down a few hundred rpm. Advance for more bottom end and retard for more top end. It usually takes about a 4 degree change for a driver to feel it. The second way is to change the valve lash.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING - Basic Kart Ignition Explained Printer-friendly format PART 2 . By John Copeland. Last month we began looking at the basic principles that make the ignition system on your engine work.
Hp per degree of timing
Finding TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) Casually - CS-111A There are lots of reasons and various occasions for needing to find Top Dead Center (TDC) for your engine. TDC is the point where a piston is exactly at the top of stroke, and the crankshaft connecting rod journal is exactly straight up (in a vertical engine of course).
Retarding the timing will make the power band smoother in the mid-range and give more top end over rev. When the spark fires closer to TDC, the pressure rise in the cylinder isn't as great. The emphasis is on gaining more degrees of retard at high rpm. This causes a shift of the heat from the cylinder to the pipe.
So in the ideal world, your idle timing should be close to stock, but the advance slope should be softer, reaching it's maximum advance of about 28-30 degrees at 4500-5000 rpm. The curve that's programmed into a stock 883 ignition module is much more aggressive than this.
